“Wildfire Survivors Share Insurance Insights”

Tricia Thorpe’s home was destroyed in the 2021 Lytton wildfire, along with many others. Thorpe, who has since rebuilt her home without insurance, shared the challenges she faced after the devastating event. She emphasized the importance of understanding insurance policies in such situations, as even those fully insured can encounter a lengthy and intricate rebuilding process.

Annick DeGooyer, who lost her home in the 2023 McDougall Creek wildfire, highlighted the significance of documenting property before disasters strike. By videotaping every room and item, DeGooyer was able to streamline the insurance claim process. However, she noted that the recovery journey can be slow and complex, especially when dealing with multiple wildfire-related claims.

Insurance Bureau of Canada vice president Aaron Sutherland emphasized that insurance policies can cover various emergency-related costs, such as hotel accommodations and food expenses, even if the home remains undamaged. Sutherland advised prompt communication with insurers to initiate the claims process promptly.

Liam Corcoran, a lawyer and adjuster, pointed out the challenge of underinsured or uninsured homes in remote areas, citing instances where premiums have become unaffordable for residents. He highlighted the importance of assessing insurance needs and understanding policy terms to navigate the aftermath of wildfires effectively.
