A recent evaluation of Wasa Lake has prompted concerns regarding the capacity of the small East Kootenay lake to accommodate powerboating activities. The initial assessment of water and sediment quality, conducted by Larratt Aquatic Consulting on behalf of the Wasa Lake Land Improvement District, indicated that the lake’s water quality was deemed suitable for recreational purposes based on limited sampling in 2025.
Spanning an area of more than one square kilometer, Wasa Lake is situated within Wasa Lake Provincial Park, approximately 30 kilometers north of Cranbrook. The assessment report highlighted the presence of widespread petroleum-based hydrocarbon contamination in the lake’s sediment, emphasizing that powerboating in shallow waters could potentially disturb sediment from the lake bed.
These findings have sparked a broader discussion surrounding boating activities, water quality, and the decision-making process for implementing any necessary restrictions on Wasa Lake. The report classified Wasa Lake as a “high-risk” location in terms of powerboating suitability, with only 13% of the lake meeting the minimum depth and shoreline distance requirements for such activities.
Furthermore, the report estimated that the lake could sustain a maximum of two powerboats or wake-surfing boats simultaneously, factoring in water quality and environmental considerations. This issue has been a divisive topic among residents and stakeholders of Wasa Lake for an extended period.
The Wasa Lake Stewardship Volunteers, a local group dedicated to preserving the lake’s health and water quality, pointed out that Wasa Lake’s shallow and landlocked nature, coupled with limited water circulation, heightens the risk of pollutant accumulation and disturbances compared to larger, more dynamic water systems.
Shauna Mabey, a committed volunteer in the Wasa Lake region, emphasized that the primary concern revolves around the potential resuspension of sediment by larger boats rather than a complete ban on motorized vessels. Mabey suggested that implementing measures like speed limits, boat size restrictions, or other controls could mitigate the risks associated with sediment disturbance.
In response to these concerns, the Regional District of East Kootenay board recently passed a resolution to urge Transport Canada to establish science-based criteria for identifying when powerboat use could jeopardize lake health. The aim is to develop standardized guidelines to address the issue comprehensively.
Kimberley Mayor and RDEK Director Don McCormick stressed the importance of securing Transport Canada’s support for any future actions related to the lake’s management. Mabey expressed apprehension about the potential long-term consequences if no changes are made, fearing irreversible damage to Wasa Lake’s ecosystem.
The ongoing debate underscores the need for a balanced approach to preserve the environmental integrity of Wasa Lake while ensuring sustainable recreational opportunities for the community.
