In a laboratory situated in Manhattan, forensic experts clad in white lab attire are persistently working to fulfill a commitment made a quarter-century ago. They are currently isolating DNA from numerous human remains fragments retrieved after the terrorist assaults on the World Trade Center. The aim is to match them with DNA samples from personal items like toothbrushes and razors provided by the families of the victims. The methods used to extract DNA and the forensic techniques have evolved significantly since 2001.
Mark Desire, the assistant director of forensic biology at the New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, expressed the profound impact of identifying and reuniting a loved one with their family after years of scientific advancements. Approximately 40% of the 2,753 individuals who perished at Ground Zero remain unidentified, including about 10 of the 24 Canadian victims. Recently, the lab achieved its first identification of previously unknown remains using a groundbreaking combination of DNA testing and genetic genealogy.
Dr. Jason Graham, the Chief Medical Examiner in New York, described this approach as a new frontier that could potentially lead to numerous identifications in the future. The innovative technique involves sending unidentified remains DNA to an external lab for complete genomic sequencing, followed by genealogical investigations conducted by the New York City Police Department.
Despite ongoing efforts by the lab, some families of victims whose remains have not been found may choose not to learn if a match is established, as it could be emotionally distressing. For instance, Abigail Carter, a Canadian expat whose husband was a victim of the attacks, decided she didn’t need confirmation of his remains as she knows he was present during the tragedy.
The Chief Medical Examiner’s office is urging families to submit DNA samples to potentially facilitate more matches. While Monica Iken-Murphy hopes for the identification of her husband’s remains, she prefers they remain at the repository in the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, where all unidentified remains are preserved.
