A decade has passed since the final performance of The Tragically Hip in Kingston, Ontario, yet Paul Langlois admits he is still coming to terms with it. The guitarist expressed his disbelief over the passage of ten years since their last show during an interview with CBC’s Eli Glasner on ‘The National’ program.
The farewell concert in Kingston, where lead singer Gord Downie bid adieu to a packed arena and viewers nationwide, was a poignant moment. Fans shared tears with Downie as he delivered emotional renditions of iconic songs like “Ahead by a Century” and “Bobcaygeon” for the last time.
Formed in 1984, The Tragically Hip, a renowned Canadian band with 13 studio albums, concluded their touring journey in 2016 with a heartfelt hometown show on August 20. Downie, diagnosed with terminal brain cancer in December 2015, tragically passed away a little over a year later at the age of 53.
To mark the 10th anniversary, CBC will be re-airing the band’s final concert this Saturday. The event, titled ‘The Tragically Hip: A National Celebration,’ will be broadcasted as a tribute to the band’s legacy and Downie’s memory.
Reflecting on the historic event, guitarist Rob Baker expressed gratitude for the enduring impact of the band’s music on fans. He emphasized that the final show was not just a celebration but a somber remembrance of a cherished career coming to an end.
Langlois recalled his initial apprehension before the last performance, feeling uneasy until Downie’s presence at the soundcheck lifted his spirits. Baker, focused on supporting his friend Gord, revealed the emotional challenges he faced during the tour but highlighted the importance of staying strong for the band.
Initially concerned about Downie’s health affecting the performances, the band members were pleasantly surprised by his physical improvement throughout the tour. Langlois admitted that they underestimated the significance of the final show, only realizing its magnitude in the aftermath as the nation rallied in support and appreciation.
While affirming that The Tragically Hip will not reunite, the band recently released a new album, ‘Live July 22 – August 20, 2016,’ featuring recordings from the farewell tour. Baker acknowledged the healing power of music, recounting a poignant moment of emotional release and the profound impact of melodies in navigating life’s challenges and losses.
