“Devastating Earthquake Hits Flores, Indonesia”

Date:

Thousands of individuals in Flores, Indonesia, were awaiting assistance as of Monday following a powerful earthquake that resulted in a death toll of at least 68 and left over 200 injured, along with extensive damage to numerous buildings and homes. Residents in the East Nusa Tenggara province, particularly on Flores island, mourned the victims while awaiting aid in isolated communities affected by the earthquake.

The aftermath of the quake showcased significant destruction, including collapsed buildings on vehicles, shattered homes, and obstructed roads due to fallen trees and boulders. Rasyid Jafar, a local clothing trader in Reo village, expressed the urgent need for essential supplies like food, medicine, and clean water, stating that his residence was now reduced to rubble.

During Indonesia’s Independence Day observance in Jakarta, President Prabowo Subianto called for prayers for those impacted by disasters in East Nusa Tenggara and other parts of the nation. The earthquake, which struck with a depth of 10 kilometers before 6 a.m. on Saturday, damaged more than 4,500 homes, displaced 19,000 individuals into temporary shelters, and left 213 wounded. Additionally, the disaster harmed numerous health facilities, schools, and places of worship in the region.

The National Disaster Management Agency reported 1,576 aftershocks as of Monday, with around 50 of them perceptible to residents. The governor of the province declared a 14-day state of emergency on Sunday to manage the crisis effectively.

In the severely affected areas like Manggarai regency, where Reo village is located, many people camped outside damaged homes, seeking shelter under makeshift tents due to the ongoing threat of aftershocks. Military and police forces, aided by aircraft, were mobilized to distribute 275 tons of aid to the region, addressing logistical challenges that hindered relief efforts in some remote communities.

Emergency field hospitals were established in Ruteng to cater to the injured, as local medical facilities were incapacitated by the quake. Rescue operations were ongoing, though there were no reports of missing individuals from residents. Aid workers managed to reach Palue Island, near the quake’s epicenter, after encountering obstacles like landslides during their journey, providing much-needed assistance to the isolated population.

Indonesia, situated in the seismic “Ring of Fire,” is susceptible to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions due to its geographical location. The recent earthquake in Flores serves as a grim reminder of the country’s vulnerability to natural disasters.
