“Rock Legend Slash Inspires New Snake Species Name”

Date:

There is a newly discovered snake species in the jungle that has been named after the famous rock guitarist Slash from Guns N’ Roses. The non-venomous groundsnake found in New Guinea has been officially designated as Lielaphis slashi, paying tribute to Slash. This 71-centimeter reddish-brown reptile is now recognized as Slash’s groundsnake.

Slash, known for his passion for reptiles, expressed his gratitude for the honor. Describing himself as a “long-time herpephile,” which refers to individuals with a keen interest in reptiles and amphibians, he was thrilled by the recognition.

The naming of the snake was led by Sara Ruane, the Field Museum’s associate curator of herpetology. Ruane’s fascination with reptiles began at a young age, and her inspiration to name a snake after Slash stemmed from an article she read featuring him with a pet python.

The newly identified species, Slash’s groundsnake, was first encountered in 2006 during fieldwork in New Guinea. This region, known for its rich biodiversity, poses challenges for researchers due to the presence of venomous snakes and the elusive nature of groundsnakes.

Despite its unassuming appearance, genetic testing confirmed that Lielaphis slashi is a distinct species within its genus. Conservationists highlight the threats faced by Slash’s groundsnake due to habitat destruction from activities such as coffee farming and mining.

The naming of this snake not only honors Slash but also sheds light on the importance of understanding and preserving the ecosystems in which such species thrive. Slash’s groundsnake may not pose a threat to humans, but it plays a vital role in the ecosystem of New Guinea.
