A woman in Nova Scotia expressed regret after contacting the RCMP to report a reckless driver, only to have an officer unexpectedly enter her home. Robin MacDougall was driving to Port Hawkesbury when she observed a vehicle swerving on Highway 104. Concerned, she dialed 911 and was instructed to call back if the situation changed. Shortly after, she reported the erratic driver heading towards Cape Breton. Later, MacDougall was surprised to receive a call from an officer who had entered her home. She was puzzled by how the situation escalated from a highway incident to a home visit.
MacDougall, who usually left her back door unlocked, was taken aback by the officer’s presence and worried about her cats escaping. She sought help from a friend, Jade Lowe, who arrived to find the officer apologetic and flustered. Despite feeling her privacy was violated, MacDougall was told by RCMP’s Staff Sgt. Kimberly Hillier that the officers acted appropriately in response to a dropped 911 call.
Hillier explained that when a follow-up call from MacDougall was disconnected, an officer was dispatched to ensure her safety. The RCMP was focused on addressing a potential distress situation rather than a search for an impaired driver. However, MacDougall disputed the claim of a dropped call, citing her reliable cellphone connection and call logs showing no additional calls made.
The disagreement highlights the need for clarity in emergency responses, especially in situations involving public safety. The incident has left MacDougall questioning future actions when faced with similar circumstances on the road.
