At an upcoming investment summit in Toronto, Prime Minister Mark Carney will present 167 potential investment opportunities, including a floating LNG terminal on British Columbia’s coast, a high-speed rail line connecting Edmonton and Calgary, and a pipeline from Alberta to the Pacific Ocean. These opportunities, detailed in a 66-page prospectus obtained by CBC News, aim to attract $1 trillion in investment from international investors and Canadian business leaders at the September 14-15 event.
The summit, organized in collaboration with the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and Public Sector Pension Investment Board, targets major investment firms and sovereign wealth funds amid trade disruptions and global uncertainties. With escalating U.S.-Canada trade tensions, Canada seeks to strengthen economic ties beyond its southern neighbor.
The investment prospectus categorizes projects into eight sectors, including conventional and clean energy, mining, marine infrastructure, power utilities, digital technology, advanced manufacturing, and transportation. Notable projects include a $57 billion US Port of Churchill expansion, a $44 billion Nova Scotia wind project, a $35 billion West Coast oil pipeline, and a $28.5 billion Ksi Lisims LNG terminal.
Projects range from fully permitted to early-stage development, such as the Port of Churchill expansion and a graphite project in Saskatchewan. The prospectus also outlines a $10.9 billion high-speed rail line for Calgary and Edmonton, a $35 billion oil pipeline, and a $2.1 billion Prairie Connector pipeline expansion.
Additionally, the document proposes investments in clean energy projects like nuclear power in New Brunswick and carbon capture in Saskatchewan, emphasizing Canada’s leadership in artificial intelligence. Opportunities include a $14.5 billion data center in Alberta and investments in Toronto-based Xanadu Quantum Technologies, known for light-powered quantum computers.
Notably absent from the list are the Alto high-speed rail project and airport privatization plans under consideration by the government. The summit aims to showcase a diverse range of investment prospects to drive economic growth and innovation in Canada.
