Sabrina Gervais, a dedicated mother, healthcare professional, and seasoned flag football player, is now aiming to add “Olympian” to her list of achievements. Leading Canada’s national women’s team into the 2026 world championship, the experienced defensive back is not only eyeing a gold medal but also a ticket to the 2028 Los Angeles Games, where flag football will make its Olympic debut.
Expressing her excitement, Gervais shared, “It would be realizing a dream I would’ve never dreamt before. I never thought about the Olympics, but now that I’m in the mix, I believe the chances are good if I can maintain my health and continue being a team leader. That would definitely be a dream come true.”
The International Federation of American Football (IFAF) World Championship kicks off in Düsseldorf, Germany, with Canada set to face Panama, Brazil, and Japan in the initial matches. The top two teams from the championship will secure spots in the Olympics, with a possibility for a third if the United States reaches the gold-medal game.
Despite the intense competition, Gervais remains optimistic about Canada’s chances, especially after the team’s impressive performance at the previous IFAF Americas Continental championship. Reflecting on their progress, she stated, “We can learn from last year’s challenges and give our best effort on the field.”
Gervais, who has been involved in flag football for over two decades, not only balances her athletic pursuits but also her role as a mother of twins and a full-time healthcare professional. She emphasizes the importance of rest, proper nutrition, and consistent training to maintain her peak performance on the field.
Acknowledging the support of her teammates and head coach Rachel Lessard, Gervais highlights the team’s chemistry as a key strength. She believes that unity and teamwork are essential at this level of competition, emphasizing the significance of working together on both offense and defense.
While Gervais remains focused on taking each day as it comes, she is driven by the desire to inspire others and make a positive impact both on and off the field. With her dedication and passion for the sport, she continues to lead by example, showcasing the potential to achieve greatness through hard work and determination.
