A massive earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 and several aftershocks hit eastern Indonesia, resulting in the death of at least 47 individuals, as reported by the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB). Approximately 2,000 people sought refuge in safer locations following the disaster.
Rescue operations have been hindered in Nagekeo, the area nearest to the epicenter, due to landslides obstructing roads and disrupting communication networks. Despite the challenges, efforts are ongoing to reach the affected region.
Following the quake, a tsunami warning was issued but later rescinded after about three hours. Residents in the vicinity described the tremors as intense, prompting swift evacuation measures to ensure safety.
In Maumere, a port town on Flores Island, initial rescue efforts uncovered 20 casualties, six injuries, and two individuals trapped under debris. The region continues to face challenges with residents trapped in buildings and landslides impeding access to various locations.
The BNPB reported significant damage to homes, schools, health facilities, places of worship, and other structures, with a total of 157 heavily damaged residences. The earthquake’s impact was felt across several provinces, causing panic and forcing many to flee their homes.
