On VJ Day, the ultimate triumph in a global conflict reshaping the world was commemorated. Today, we express enduring gratitude to those who bravely served in the Far East.
Before assuming office as the Labour MP for Dover and Deal, I dedicated over 5 years to the UK Armed Forces, undertaking three operational missions – one in Iraq and two in Afghanistan. Witnessing firsthand the lasting influence of Second World War veterans on today’s servicemen and women, I acknowledge their unwavering commitment.
Yet, the toll of warfare is evident through lives lost, families uprooted, and communities fractured. It is imperative to honor and preserve the stories of our VJ Day heroes to ensure that the past’s lessons are not forgotten and their sacrifices remain acknowledged.
In the face of a volatile global landscape, it is crucial that our dedication to peace and security is matched by unwavering support for those safeguarding it. Since coming into power, the Labour government has prioritized renewing the nation’s commitment to its defenders, enshrining the Armed Forces Covenant in law and establishing an Armed Forces Commissioner.
While progress continues, we take pride in accomplishments like reclaiming 36,000 military residences into public ownership and investing over £7 billion to address neglected housing needs throughout this parliamentary term.
As we navigate an uncertain future, the recent pledge by the Prime Minister at the NATO Summit to increase national security spending to 5% of GDP by 2035 underscores the ongoing importance of recognizing and honoring our VJ day veterans and the unyielding dedication of our current servicemen and women in upholding their legacy.
