Oleksandr Usyk has provided a significant boost to Tyson Fury by announcing his intention to continue fighting for the next two years.
Earlier this year, the 38-year-old outlined his retirement strategy, stating he had two more bouts left before retiring. In July, Usyk defeated Daniel Dubois in front of a crowd of over 90,000 at Wembley Stadium to secure the undisputed heavyweight championship for the second time.
Usyk plans to take the remainder of the year off to spend time with his family before returning to the ring in 2026. Despite being required to defend his WBO title against Joseph Parker post his victory over Dubois, the fight has been postponed due to medical reasons, with Usyk’s team successfully obtaining a 90-day extension.
In an interview with UNN, the Ukrainian champion disclosed that he has resumed training and aims to make a comeback next year. Usyk, who will turn 39 in January, shared his new retirement goal of retiring at 41 and establishing a sports academy thereafter.
Fury, who had previously announced his retirement following consecutive losses to Usyk, revealed in July his intentions to make a comeback next year. His promoter, Frank Warren, confirmed that Fury is gearing up to return to the ring in 2026 after previously hinting at retirement.
While speculations of a potential fight between Fury and Anthony Joshua arose following Joshua’s defeat to Dubois, Warren emphasized Fury’s focus on a rematch with Usyk. Warren expressed confidence in Fury’s desire for a rematch with Usyk, highlighting the close and thrilling nature of their previous encounters.
In other boxing news, Kieron Conway is scheduled to face George Liddard on October 17 at York Hall, Bethnal Green. The event will be broadcast live on DAZN, with the undercard starting at 7pm UK time and the headline fight at approximately 10pm UK time.
