“UK Parents Underestimate Daily Water Usage by Full Bathtub”

Date:

A recent study by drinking water supplier Affinity Water reveals that one in three UK parents underestimate their daily water consumption by the equivalent of a full bathtub. The survey of 2,000 parents found that 66% believed they used less water daily than the national average of 156 litres.

Surprisingly, a third of respondents thought their daily water usage was below 50 litres, indicating a significant underestimation of around 100 litres per day, enough to fill a bathtub. The study also highlighted a general lack of awareness regarding household water consumption and the origins of drinking water.

Moreover, nearly two-thirds of participants confessed to prolonging their showers for reasons like enjoying the warmth, destressing, or seeking moments of peace. To address this issue, Affinity Water is launching The Great Water Hunt initiative to educate families about the importance of water and its sources.

Families participating in the initiative will act as ‘water detectives,’ uncovering information about local water systems and learning practical water-saving tips for home use. Interactive ‘water beacons’ placed in various locations will provide fun facts and insights about local water systems for families to explore.

James Curtis, Affinity Water’s head of leakage, emphasized that many individuals are unaware of their daily water usage, with some households underestimating by approximately 100 litres. Despite water shortages in certain parts of the UK, water conservation is not a top priority for many families.

“The Great Water Hunt aims to help families reconnect with water, understand its sources, and demonstrate how simple daily actions can contribute to water conservation for future generations to enjoy,” Curtis stated.

Additionally, the research indicates that while many households make efforts to adopt sustainable practices like reducing food waste and energy consumption, only 57% actively take steps to decrease water usage. Awareness of broader water challenges remains low, with a significant portion of parents believing that serious water shortages in the UK are still years away without intervention.

Apart from in-person activities in Affinity Water regions, families across the UK can access free online resources provided by Affinity Water to learn about water usage and acquire tips for reducing waste at home.
