A significant update impacting internet usage in UK households has been implemented recently, leading to a notable shift in the adoption of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). The new regulations, introduced by the UK regulatory body Ofcom, now require individuals to verify their age before accessing adult websites.
The primary objective of this change is to prevent minors from accessing inappropriate content online. Ofcom revealed that 8% of children aged 8-14 in the UK have visited adult websites, prompting the need for stricter measures.
Ofcom emphasized the importance of safeguarding children online, stating that the new rules represent a crucial step in protecting young individuals from harmful online content. However, the requirement for users to provide personal information such as names, addresses, and financial details to access adult sites has raised concerns among UK internet users.
Following the update, there has been a surge in the utilization of VPNs. These tools enable users to conceal their IP addresses and encrypt online activities. Additionally, VPNs can be used to mask one’s location, allowing users to access region-restricted content like the US version of Netflix or UK services such as Sky Go and BBC iPlayer while abroad.
Although the correlation between the Ofcom regulations and increased VPN usage is not definitive, one VPN service, Proton VPN, reported a remarkable spike in user sign-ups, with a more than 1,400% hourly increase compared to the usual baseline since the enforcement of the new rules on July 25.
Proton VPN noted that major global events often trigger a surge in VPN usage. Several VPN services have experienced a surge in popularity, with five VPN apps currently ranking in the top 10 most downloaded apps on UK app stores.
While Ofcom’s initiative aims to enhance online safety for children, some individuals have raised concerns about the implications of sharing sensitive data with unfamiliar companies. Jake Moore, Global Cybersecurity Advisor at ESET, highlighted the potential privacy and security risks associated with the Online Safety Act’s age verification requirements.
