UK Braces for Weekend Snowfall Amid Cold Snap

Date:

Snow is predicted to arrive in the UK by the upcoming weekend, with the likelihood of snowfall highest in the northern regions. Despite the winter season’s first snow not yet making an official appearance, meteorologists anticipate a light dusting starting from next Friday. If the snow does materialize, it could persist for three to four days.

Following a remarkably mild October and early November, the Met Office has projected a colder week ahead. Expect increased chances of overnight frost as we move into the middle of the month. Weather forecasts indicate the initial snowfall around 6 pm on Friday, November 14, with a few centimeters expected in northern Scotland, notably around Inverness.

According to Jim Dale, a senior meteorologist at British Weather Services, the snow may extend as far south as northern England. He mentioned, “Snow is likely on its way by this time next week for the north. From next Friday onwards, we could see snow for several days. Although the Scottish mountains will likely see it first, Northern Ireland and parts of northern England could also be affected.”

Simultaneously, temperatures are forecasted to drop below freezing starting next Friday. Glasgow and Aberdeen are expected to reach -1°C on Friday night, while southern England may still see around 6°C by Monday morning. The Met Office also anticipates frost and overnight fog as we approach the middle of the month, with the possibility of hill snow toward the end of November.

The Met Office’s extended forecast for November 12 to November 21 predicts unsettled and mostly mild conditions initially, with rain bands moving across the UK. However, a transition to drier weather and slightly cooler temperatures is expected from the middle of the month, with an increased risk of overnight frost.
