An urgent notification has been sent out to numerous Gmail users, highlighting the importance of understanding the implications of artificial intelligence scanning emails. The alert was shared online by Lori Greiner, a well-known television personality and businesswoman.
Over the weekend, Greiner took to Instagram to inform users with Gmail accounts about crucial information. She urged them to share the message with their friends and family to ensure everyone’s safety and awareness.
The concern arises from Google’s introduction of new AI smart functionalities meant to analyze emails for smart searches, contextual responses, and email summaries. Although Google claims that it does not read messages for personal use, Greiner expressed apprehension about the extent of AI scanning.
In her Instagram post, the celebrity emphasized the importance of heeding the warning for Gmail users. She revealed that Google has been allowing AI to scrutinize all types of emails, including financial documents, tax information, and personal conversations, without users’ knowledge.
To address these privacy concerns, Greiner provided a simple solution to disable AI scanning within Gmail. Users can navigate to Settings, access “see all settings,” locate “Smart features,” and deactivate smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet to prevent message scanning by Google.
Furthermore, users are advised to manage Workspace Smart Features by unchecking boxes related to Workspace and other products to enhance data protection against AI usage.
Google reassures users that personal data is safeguarded and inaccessible to its team or third parties. The tech giant clarifies that AI models like Gemini do not train on personal emails and are solely used for specific tasks within Gmail, ensuring inbox privacy.
While Google ensures data security, users who prefer to limit AI involvement in their emails can opt out by disabling smart features in their Gmail settings.
