It has been almost four years since authorities commenced their search for Tom Phillips, who disappeared along with his three young children in 2021. Recent revelations shed light on the distressing living conditions they endured.
Phillips, accompanied by his three children – Jayda, Maverick, and Ember, aged eight, seven, and five respectively at the time, met a tragic end in Marokopa, a small town in New Zealand’s Waikato region, during a failed burglary attempt.
Reports confirm that they resided in a primitive camp deep within the New Zealand wilderness. Despite the police describing the camp as unsuitable for children, it appears that Phillips resorted to feeding them animal feed.
During the investigation, authorities uncovered bags of animal feed containing various types of maize typically used for livestock like pigs, cows, and chickens.
Furthermore, firearms and ammunition were found at the campsite, where one of Phillips’ children, ten-year-old Maverick, pointed a gun at the approaching officers. Fortunately, Maverick eventually complied with the officers’ instructions to disarm.
A local landowner mentioned that the dense bush where the camp was situated provided ample cover, making it challenging to locate. The owner emphasized the rugged terrain and limestone features that obscured the camp’s location.
Law enforcement believes that the camp was temporary, indicating that the family frequently moved and might have received external assistance. Detective Senior Sergeant Andrew Saunders highlighted the challenging environment that served as the family’s hideout.
Phillips disappeared from the family farm in Marokopa in 2017. Acting Deputy Commissioner Jill Rogers affirmed that the children were physically unharmed, but their mental well-being was a primary concern. She assured that their welfare would be closely monitored during their recovery process.
The mother of the children, referred to as Cat, expressed relief but also sadness at the resolution after enduring four years of anguish. She eagerly anticipated reuniting with her children and expressed gratitude for the ordeal finally coming to an end.
