Toronto Hydro has successfully restored power to numerous residents in the east end and parts of downtown after an outage that lasted over an hour on Wednesday night. The utility announced on the social media platform X at 10:30 p.m. that power had been fully reinstated.
Expressing regret for the inconvenience caused, Toronto Hydro thanked customers and the community for their patience and cooperation during the restoration efforts. As per the outage map, more than 31,000 customers were impacted by the outage as of 9:40 p.m. The widespread power loss was attributed to a supply issue from Hydro One, according to Toronto Hydro.
During the outage, the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) confirmed that elevators and escalators at various Line 2 subway stations were affected. Additionally, Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) reported a power failure in several buildings, prompting immediate evacuations and warnings to avoid the affected areas.
Buildings such as Eric Palin Hall, Sally Horsfall Eaton Centre for Studies in Community Health, Rogers Communications Centre, Pitman Hall, International Living/Learning Centre, and Kerr Hall at the Toronto Campus were impacted by the outages. TMU emphasized the need for evacuations to ensure the safety of occupants due to potential risks to critical safety systems like fire detection and sprinklers.
TMU instructed the suspension of all classes, labs, and exams during the evacuation period. Employees were advised to either relocate to an alternative workspace or take a temporary break until power was fully restored.
