Residents in Scotland are encouraged to verify if they are eligible for a financial assistance program aimed at offsetting the expenses associated with increased energy bills during the colder winter period.
Last year, approximately 500,000 households received the Winter Heating Payment, amounting to a total of £27.3 million in support.
The Winter Heating Payment, which amounts to £59.75 and is distributed in December, serves to assist individuals in coping with escalating energy bills. It has replaced the previous £25 Cold Weather Payment administered by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
Unlike its predecessor from the DWP, this payment is not contingent on a prolonged period of cold weather in a specific location but is an annual lump sum provided regardless of the temperature.
Many households will automatically qualify for this payment, particularly those receiving low-income benefits, including families with young children, individuals with disabilities, or elderly individuals.
Information on MYGOV.SCOT indicates that the payment will be automatically disbursed between December and February, as reported by the Daily Record.
Recipients of the payment will be notified via letter or email in advance, and the payment will be labeled as ‘WHP’ (Winter Heating Payment) on their bank statements.
Individuals who qualify for other benefits will also automatically receive the Winter Heating Payment. The specific qualifying week for this year’s payment is yet to be confirmed but is anticipated to be the first full week of November, similar to last year, spanning from November 3 to 9.
Eligibility criteria include being employed or self-employed and receiving a child or young person disability element. Additionally, individuals who are not employed or self-employed but meet the requirements for Pension Credit will also qualify.
Moreover, individuals with children under 5 or those receiving specific benefits will meet the eligibility criteria for the Winter Heating Payment.
In contrast, pensioners in England and Wales are set to receive Winter Fuel Payments ranging from £100 to £300, distributed by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) during November and December.
Pension Age Winter Heating Payments will be issued by Social Security Scotland, leveraging data from the DWP. The guidance on MYGOV.SCOT now includes comprehensive details on these annual one-off payments.
Payments will be processed automatically starting from November, with the amount individuals receive dependent on factors such as age, household circumstances, and residency in the UK during the qualifying week from Monday, September 15 to Sunday, September 21, 2025.
