A Saskatchewan-based company is engaged in hydrogen drilling operations, aiming to demonstrate the feasibility of extracting hydrogen from underground sources at a commercial scale, rather than relying on fossil fuel production methods. Recently, Max Power Mining, headquartered in Regina, initiated the drilling of its third well in the Lawson Complex, located in southern Saskatchewan, with the potential to establish the world’s initial large-scale commercial natural hydrogen system.
Chad Levesque, the president and director of the company, emphasized the significance of hydrogen as a crucial element in various industrial processes such as ammonia production, petroleum refining, and transitioning towards cleaner energy sources. Levesque highlighted the necessity for a more environmentally friendly method of sourcing hydrogen, underscoring the potential of naturally occurring hydrogen to address this need effectively.
Hydrogen serves as a versatile gas that can be utilized as a clean fuel or converted into electricity through fuel cells, with water being the sole byproduct of its reaction with oxygen. Due to its minimal greenhouse gas emissions, hydrogen is considered a promising energy source for sectors like transportation and steelmaking. However, the predominant method of hydrogen production involves energy-intensive processes, resulting in significant carbon emissions.
In contrast, natural hydrogen, often referred to as white hydrogen, offers a more sustainable alternative as it can be extracted from underground deposits with relatively low greenhouse gas emissions. Levesque highlighted the cost-effectiveness of utilizing existing equipment and techniques employed in natural gas extraction for capturing natural hydrogen. Nonetheless, extracting hydrogen poses unique challenges compared to traditional oil and gas drilling methods.
Natural hydrogen originates from natural processes underground, such as the serpentinization of iron-rich rocks and the radioactive decay of uranium and thorium, resulting in the production of hydrogen gas in geological formations. While the discovery of natural hydrogen deposits presents promising opportunities, experts caution that extracting hydrogen may require specialized techniques due to its volatile nature and potential challenges in extraction.
Max Power’s exploration efforts in Saskatchewan, leveraging the region’s geological characteristics conducive to hydrogen accumulation, have shown promising results in detecting natural hydrogen reserves. However, uncertainties remain regarding the extraction feasibility, quantity, and commercial viability of these deposits, necessitating further research and data analysis to determine the potential impact of natural hydrogen on decarbonization efforts globally.
