A Russian helicopter pilot faced a critical decision following a tragic accident that claimed the lives of five individuals. Disturbing video footage captured the aircraft in Russia’s Republic of Dagestan attempting to land on November 7. The helicopter collided with a pier, causing its tail to break off. Despite the damage, the pilot attempted to steer the helicopter towards the open water before it ultimately crashed into a home, resulting in the deaths of five senior members of a Russian defense manufacturer.
The helicopter, identified as the Ka-226, was transporting workers from a defense plant associated with warfare. Following the tail breakage, the helicopter crashed onto a house near the Caspian Sea, leading to the deaths of four passengers who were burned alive. Three survivors sustained serious injuries from the crash.
Newly released footage illustrates the unfolding disaster as the Ka-226 clipped an earthen pier during its landing approach, causing the tail to snap off. Despite the damage, the pilot attempted to lift the helicopter back into the air, flying over the sea with the dangling tail. However, the helicopter lost control while trying to ascend over the open water. Subsequently, the pilot steered the helicopter towards land for an emergency landing, but failed as the aircraft spun and crashed.
The video footage concludes before showing the helicopter engulfed in flames upon crashing. Additional CCTV footage revealed the helicopter igniting near the shore after the crash. Among the survivors, the pilot and two others are currently receiving intensive care.
The pilot’s actions have drawn criticism in Russia, with fellow pilots questioning the decision to move towards deep water rather than landing in shallow areas. Conflict Intelligence Team founder Ruslan Leviev speculated that the pilot may have been under the influence of alcohol, suggesting erratic behavior during the flight.
The tragic incident claimed the lives of four senior staff members from Kizlyar Electromechanical Plant, including Chief Engineer Sergey Suslov, Chief Helicopter Design Engineer Sirajutdin Saaduev, Deputy General Director for Transport Support Achalo Magomedov, and driver Islam Dzhabrailov. The plant, known for producing ground control and diagnostic systems for military planes, is under sanctions due to its involvement in the conflict in Ukraine.
Described as a “catastrophe” by the Russian Federal Air Transport Agency, the cause of the crash occurred as the Ka-226 was en route from Kizlyar to a recreation base.
