“Rising Prices and Luxury Options: The Advent Calendar Dilemma”

Date:

Even though Halloween is still ahead of us, supermarkets are already stocking up on holiday-themed food and Christmas presents, including advent calendars.

A traditional part of the festive season, many individuals are accustomed to purchasing advent calendars to mark the days leading up to Christmas and enjoy a daily treat throughout December. Nevertheless, the availability of advent calendars appears to be diminishing. Not only are the prices increasing for numerous chocolate advent calendars, but now there are options with various gifts, ranging from beauty products to alcohol, that can cost hundreds of pounds.

While it’s understandable that luxury advent calendars may come with a higher price tag, I was taken aback by the prices of some chocolate offerings during my recent supermarket visit.

For instance, the Cadbury Dairy Milk advent calendar (90g) is priced at £2.50 in Sainsbury’s, whereas the Ferrero Rocher advent calendar (258g) costs a substantial £17.50 this year.

Although I, like many chocolate enthusiasts, enjoy Ferrero Rocher occasionally during the festive period, I find it hard to justify the high cost of this product.

Similarly, the Lindt Selection advent calendar (289g) is priced at £16, while the Teddy AR advent calendar (250g) costs £15.

The non-dairy NOMO Ultimate Choc advent calendar (320g) is also available for £15, and the Tony’s Chocoloney Countdown calendar (216g) is priced at £12.

Even the Cadbury Heroes advent calendar (230g) carries a price tag of £7.50 this year, while the Kinder Bueno advent calendar (181g) is priced at £9.

Not limited to Sainsbury’s, consumers purchasing the Ferrero Rocher advent calendar from Selfridges will have to pay even more, with the product retailing at a hefty £24.99 from the store, whereas it is priced the same as in Sainsbury’s on Ocado.

Boots is offering a slightly different Ferrero Collection Chocolate Advent Calendar (259g) for £18, while the same product is slightly cheaper at £15 in Tesco.

What was once a charming Christmas tradition accessible to all now seems like another expense during a season that already raises financial concerns for many.

This situation particularly affects parents who often need to purchase multiple advent calendars for their children. Let’s hope they are not all fans of Ferrero Rocher!

Sainsbury’s, the Ferrero Group, and Selfridges have been contacted for comment.
