Ricky Hatton was reportedly in good spirits during a family visit shortly before his passing, according to statements made at a Coroner’s Court session on Thursday. The inquest, overseen by Alison Mutch at South Manchester’s Coroner’s Court in Stockport, revealed the preliminary cause of death as ‘hanging.’ A full inquest is scheduled for March 20, 2026.
Paul Speak, Hatton’s manager and longtime friend, discovered him unresponsive at his residence in Gee Cross, Hyde, on September 14. The pair had plans to travel to Dubai from Manchester Airport.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed Hatton’s death, stating that there were no suspicious circumstances and the case was referred to the coroner. Family members last saw Hatton two days before his passing, noting he appeared healthy. However, he failed to attend a scheduled event the following day.
Speak described the moment he found Hatton, expressing shock and disbelief. Despite the circumstances, Speak believes Hatton did not intend for the outcome. Hatton’s funeral procession, held on October 10, included various stops honoring the boxing legend, with thousands of mourners paying their respects along the route.
Notable figures like Tyson Fury, Liam Gallagher, and Wayne Rooney attended the service, where eulogies highlighted Hatton’s iconic status in sports. The procession, accompanied by a yellow Reliant Robin, made poignant stops at places significant to Hatton before concluding at Manchester Cathedral.
Following the service, the cortege visited the Etihad Stadium, home to Manchester City, before a private committal attended by close family members. In case of emotional distress, the Samaritans offer a free helpline at 116 123 for support.
