Mark Petchey, former coach of Emma Raducanu, expressed that it will pose a challenge for the British tennis sensation to secure another Grand Slam victory. However, he remains optimistic that she can achieve success by adjusting her playing style to counter the formidable “big hitters.”
Raducanu faced a disappointing defeat in straight sets against Elena Rybakina in the third round of the US Open, putting an end to her aspirations of clinching another major title. Despite a strong start at Flushing Meadows, the 22-year-old was outplayed by the Kazakhstani player.
Following her remarkable triumph at the US Open four years ago, Raducanu has sought guidance from various coaches to refine her game. Although she collaborated with Francis Roig, Rafael Nadal’s former coach, for the US Open, the outcome did not meet expectations despite her commendable initial performance.
Petchey emphasized that Raducanu’s key areas for improvement lie in enhancing her baseline game and maintaining a consistent serve to effectively compete against top players like Rybakina, Aryna Sabalenka, and Amanda Anisimova. He highlighted the importance of Raducanu’s strategic play style of redirecting shots from the baseline to keep her opponents on the move.
