O2 has issued a new warning that could impact internet and messaging app access for some users as they phase out their older 3G technology in various UK regions. The recent update comes as part of the transition following the integration of O2 into Virgin Media.
The 3G signal from O2 has already been discontinued in locations like Durham, Norwich, Telford, Guildford, Watford, and Torquay, with parts of Scotland next in line to be affected. Starting from November 5, 2025, individuals using 3G-only devices will no longer be able to utilize data services, including sending emails, reading WhatsApp messages, or browsing online without Wi-Fi. Basic phone calls and SMS texts will remain functional.
Residents in eastern regions such as Aberdeen and Dundee will witness the initial phase-out of 3G. By the end of 2025, O2 aims to complete the shutdown of 3G nationwide.
The decision to discontinue 3G stems from its outdated nature and limited capabilities compared to advanced technologies like 4G and 5G. 3G is costly to maintain and consumes bandwidth that could be utilized for more efficient signals. While 3G only offers speeds around 3Mbps, 4G and 5G can deliver speeds up to 100Mbps.
Those affected by the 3G shutdown are expected to be minimal as most consumers already possess 4G and 5G-compatible devices. O2 is providing options for 3G customers, including free upgrades to 4G-ready devices or discounted rates for new devices. Other network providers like EE and Vodafone have already taken similar steps to optimize network resources.
Virgin Media O2’s Chief Technology Officer, Jeanie York, emphasized the shift towards faster and more reliable 4G and 5G networks, ensuring a superior user experience. Direct communication will be sent to impacted users to offer guidance and support, particularly urging those without 4G or 5G devices to upgrade promptly to continue accessing mobile data post 3G phase-out.
