FIFA’s recent decision to terminate the employment of a high-ranking official who criticized Gianni Infantino’s handling of a proposed World Cup financial deal has drawn criticism from Norway’s soccer president, Lise Klaveness. Klaveness expressed her disapproval, labeling the dismissal of FIFA’s chief operating officer, Kevin Lamour, as unacceptable and indicative of a management style driven by fear.
Lamour’s departure, which occurred 17 days after his public remarks denouncing Infantino’s $20 billion private equity initiative, has sparked controversy within the organization. Klaveness, speaking to the Associated Press, praised Lamour as “the best football administrator I have ever met” and called on FIFA leadership and administration, particularly singling out FIFA secretary general Mattias Grafström, to resist directives that do not align with the best interests of football.
A former Norway national team player, Oslo judge, and executive committee member at UEFA, Klaveness has been an advocate for good governance in soccer. Lamour, who had a longstanding professional relationship with Infantino, has now found himself at odds with the FIFA president, further escalating the crisis within the organization.
The backlash from UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation, and CONCACAF was triggered by a secretive plan to involve investors led by Joshua Kushner in the future profits of the World Cup. Lamour’s criticism highlighted the lack of transparency in Infantino’s leadership, emphasizing the need for integrity and openness within FIFA’s operations.
The termination of Lamour’s employment has been described as a firing rather than a resignation by Klaveness, who suggested that the decision was made under pressure from higher authorities within FIFA. Despite FIFA’s acknowledgment of Lamour’s service, Klaveness emphasized the importance of his actions in bringing attention to the controversial project and ensuring accountability within the organization.
