The Copernicus climate monitoring service confirmed that June and July were the hottest on record in Western Europe, resulting in an estimated 25,000 heat-related deaths.
The extreme heat has led to devastating wildfires and decreased water levels in important water bodies like the Danube. Historians estimate that up to 200 Nazi warships were deliberately sunk near Prahovo, Serbia, in September 1944 to impede the advancing Soviet forces. The current low water levels have also exposed a German military motorcycle in Hungary, an unexploded British bomb in Slovakia, and the potential remains of a mammoth in Bulgaria. These revelations have raised urgent concerns for countries along the Danube.
Countries like Romania and Hungary have implemented measures to address the low water levels, impacting activities such as crop irrigation and nuclear power plant operations. The situation has prompted calls for better conservation of natural resources and increased awareness of climate change impacts.
