Sky and Virgin Media viewers will soon have a reduced channel lineup, with several MTV stations going off the air tomorrow. MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live will all stop broadcasting as of December 31. Those checking the TV planner will see a message indicating the channels are now closed.
The decline in traditional TV viewership, as more people turn to streaming services like YouTube and apps such as TikTok for music content, is cited as the reason behind MTV’s decision. A source mentioned to The Sun that MTV has fallen victim to the rise of streaming, marking a significant shift in the music industry.
While music-focused MTV channels are being discontinued in certain regions, MTV HD will remain accessible. The channel will continue to feature reality shows like Naked Dating UK and Geordie Shore. MTV, which played a pivotal role in shaping youth culture and revolutionizing music consumption since its inception in 1981, has been a significant force in the industry.
In addition to the MTV channels, four children’s TV channels, including Pop and Tiny Pop, are also set to be removed from the listings. In total, nine channels will no longer be available on Sky and Virgin Media TV.
