According to a former prison officer turned MP, Britain’s prisons are in crisis due to a decade of austerity measures imposed by the Conservative government, pushing the system to its limit.
Sally Jameson, who worked at HMP & YOI Moorland for five years, acknowledged the recent unacceptable accidental releases but blamed the Conservatives for neglecting the prison system over the years.
Recently, a registered sex offender, Brahim Kaddour-Cherif, was mistakenly released from HMP Wandsworth, followed by the release of fraudster William Smith due to a court records mix-up.
The MP for Doncaster Central recognized the need for time to address the system’s issues, promising that the Labour party would work towards improving the state of prisons.
Jameson highlighted the impact of Tory austerity, which led to increased violence, self-harm, and drug abuse in prisons as funding was slashed, with a substantial 30% decrease in the Justice budget from 2010 to 2015.
Under the Conservative government, 860 prisoners were mistakenly released, including violent offenders, with a rise in accidental releases from 81 in 2022/23 to 115 in 2023/24 during the final years of their administration.
Notable cases of mistaken releases include serial rapist Joseph McCann, who committed multiple attacks shortly after being released, and William Fernandez, who raped a teenager after his release for sexual assault.
Despite promises in consecutive Conservative manifestos to add 20,000 extra prison spaces by the mid-2020s, the timeline was delayed. Jameson acknowledged the unacceptable errors under Labour’s watch but emphasized the challenges inherited from a struggling system.
She reiterated that the prison system, under strain from years of Tory austerity, requires time to recover. Efforts have been initiated to avoid prison capacity shortages through sentencing reforms.
