James Brose, the current mayor of North Algona Wilberforce in eastern Ontario, is concerned about the lack of candidates stepping forward to run for mayor in the upcoming fall election. Brose, who has served as mayor for eight years and as a councillor for four years prior, has decided not to seek re-election due to health issues he faced last year.
While the deadline for filing nomination papers is approaching, only seven candidates have filed for the four council seats in North Algona Wilberforce, with no one yet to announce a mayoral candidacy to succeed Brose. The demands of the mayoral role, including a heavy workload and managing social media, along with personal factors like limited vacation time, have contributed to Brose’s decision to step back.
Similar challenges are being faced in other municipalities in eastern Ontario, such as Carleton Place, Petawawa, and Beckwith, where only the incumbents have filed for mayoral or reeve positions. This trend of potential acclamations mirrors past Ontario elections, with 179 municipalities having acclaimed council positions in 2022.
In Arnprior, only five out of seven council seats have candidates, with incumbent Coun. Dan Lynch expressing confidence in a last-minute influx of nominations, similar to previous election cycles. Both Brose and Lynch acknowledge the financial barriers and time commitment involved in municipal politics, highlighting the modest remuneration as a challenge for younger residents to participate.
Despite the hurdles, both Brose and Lynch remain committed to serving their communities, with Lynch emphasizing the need for genuine passion and dedication to overcome the demands of the role. The upcoming fall election will test the willingness of candidates to step up and contribute to the democratic process in Ontario municipalities.
