A man walked into a shop thinking he had won €100 (£86) from a scratch card but was surprised to learn he had actually won over €100,000 (£86,400). The customer, who left shortly after, entered the Agora Café bar in Sarmeola di Rubano in Italy’s Padua province on September 1 under the impression that he had won €100.
However, the shop owner, Erika Ni, disclosed that he had actually won €100,000 (£86,515) from the €2 (£1.73) scratch card he bought at the end of August. Erika mentioned that the man, believed to be in his 40s, looked at her in disbelief before leaving the establishment in utter astonishment. He did celebrate with Erika and other patrons at the bar before departing.
Erika recalled the moment when the man, a familiar customer, reacted with surprise, saying, “We know the winner well, he’s a regular customer. He put his hands on his head and asked me, with a smile, if I was kidding, but I wasn’t.” She added that she couldn’t forget the event as it was truly remarkable.
The man, who arrived with a smile, was initially eager to claim the supposed €100 prize but was shocked to find out about his substantial win. Erika was so thrilled for him that she struggled to convey the news.
She said, “I didn’t even know how to tell him because I was so excited. When I told him that he might have misread it and that he had actually won a hundred thousand euros, he put his hands on his head and asked me if I was kidding him.”
Erika speculated that he may have gone on vacation with some of his winnings. She mentioned, “I think he went on vacation, he decided to treat himself. He said he’ll come back with something for us too. Here in town, everyone’s talking about it.”
Reports from il mattino di Padova indicated that not only Erika but also friends and customers at the bar celebrated his stroke of luck. Erika provided him with the necessary information to claim his winnings, emphasizing that for such amounts, a visit to the bank is required. She believed that he was already planning something special for himself and his family.
