A fundraising campaign purportedly established by Christian Brueckner, the prime suspect in the Madeleine McCann case, has been initiated on GoFundMe, urging individuals to contribute thousands of pounds for him to depart from Germany.
Brueckner, a convicted rapist currently under suspicion for Madeleine’s disappearance, launched the fundraiser shortly after his release from prison where he served time for assaulting a 72-year-old woman in Portugal. In conversations with a friend, he expressed his intention to seek financial assistance to leave the country.
Seeking €26,000 (£22,860) to exit Germany, Brueckner utilized the popular fundraising platform to solicit donations, emphasizing his desire to escape the constant scrutiny and negative attention. He highlighted the need for financial support to facilitate his departure and evade the ongoing media scrutiny.
In his plea to German taxpayers, Brueckner outlined his wish to legally depart the country and find solace away from the relentless accusations and investigations. He detailed how small amounts of money could aid his journey, such as funding for airport coffee or purchasing a one-way ticket to a nation beyond the reach of German authorities.
Despite receiving unemployment benefits and seeking employment in Germany, Brueckner faced backlash from locals upon his release, with residents expressing their disapproval through protests and petitions to have him relocated. Following public pressure, authorities planned to move him to southern Germany to reduce his visibility and potential confrontations.
The fundraising campaign managed to collect €100 in donations before GoFundMe removed it for violating their terms of service. A spokesperson for GoFundMe confirmed the removal and assured that donors had been refunded their contributions.
