The recent Louvre heist continues to make waves across social media platforms, leaving many astonished at the audacity of the crime. The theft, reminiscent of a movie plot, captured the public’s interest as French thieves successfully snatched eight crown jewels valued at approximately €88 million (£77 million) within a mere seven minutes.
Surprisingly, reports have surfaced revealing that the heist was made possible by breaching the Louvre’s security system, which one would assume to be highly secure. According to sources such as Libération, the renowned museum allegedly safeguarded its security systems with the simplistic password ‘LOUVRE.’
In 2014, the French National Cybersecurity Agency (ANSSI) conducted security assessments at the Louvre and identified the weak password, recommending the implementation of a more sophisticated one.
Online reactions were swift, with individuals poking fun at the situation. Some humorously pointed out the irony of the video surveillance system password being “Louvre,” while others suggested more secure alternatives like ‘Louvre1’ or ‘LouvreMuseumParis.’
In a related development, one of the individuals taken into custody for the theft is a minor social media influencer with a penchant for motorcycles, who previously worked as a security guard at the Pompidou Centre, as per French media reports.
The 39-year-old suspect, identified as Abdoulaye N, was apprehended at his residence in Aubervilliers, a suburb north of Paris, six days after the heist and faces charges of organized theft and criminal conspiracy. Additionally, four suspects, including three believed to be part of the gang that executed the theft using a stolen truck and specialized equipment to access the museum, are currently in custody.
