“Labour Urged to Pick Female, Non-Londoner as Deputy Leader”

Date:

Harriet Harman emphasized the necessity of having a female and non-Londoner as Angela Rayner’s successor in Labour’s deputy leader position. She stressed the importance of selecting a candidate who complements the Prime Minister rather than opposes them. Harman highlighted the need to diversify the party leadership by having a woman in this role alongside a male Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister.

Labor’s swift six-week race to replace Rayner began with MPs aiming to secure nominations. The National Executive Committee set a deadline of October 25 for the new deputy leader appointment. Candidates must garner support from at least 80 MPs by Thursday. Bell Ribeiro-Addy is the sole confirmed contender, while Dame Emily Thornberry is considering running.

MPs are encouraging Lucy Powell, Anneliese Dodds, Stella Creasy, and Rosena Allin-Khan to join the race. Housing Minister Alison McGovern did not rule out participating in the contest.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood ruled out her candidacy, prioritizing her role in securing borders. Louise Haigh and Dawn Butler also declined to run but advocated for a fair selection process. The high threshold for nominations may limit left-wing candidates from appearing on the ballot.

Keir Starmer addressed MPs at a meeting following his recent Cabinet reshuffle but refrained from publicly endorsing any deputy leadership candidate.
