John Tory, the former mayor of Toronto, has been appointed as the new chair of the board of directors for the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). In a released statement, Tory expressed his enthusiasm for collaborating with TIFF’s board members, leaders, artists, and filmmakers to influence the organization’s future direction. His tenure is set to commence on October 1st, coinciding with this year’s festival dates from September 10th to 20th. Taking over from Jeffrey Remedios, who held the position since 2021, Tory steps into the role with praise from his predecessor who expressed enduring pride in his contributions to the festival’s evolution.
In addition to the leadership change, TIFF disclosed the appointment of three new board members, namely Deborah Flint, David Furnish, and Daniel Tisch Echevarría. Furthermore, Asha Daniere, a board member for nine years, will be stepping down. TIFF conveyed its gratitude towards Daniere for her dedicated service and valuable contributions to the organization.
