“Man Guilty of Flamingo Theft and Cruelty in Vegas”

Date:

In Las Vegas, a man from Ontario was found guilty of animal cruelty charges for snatching a flamingo named Peachy from its habitat at a well-known hotel. Mitchell Fairbarn, the accused, allegedly injured the flamingo in a drunken and deliberate act. Following a trial where he pleaded not guilty, Fairbarn was convicted on felony and misdemeanor animal cruelty charges. He is awaiting sentencing and could face up to four years in prison for the felony charge and six months for the misdemeanor charge.

Fairbarn, described as a contractor from rural Ontario, admitted to drinking “30 to 40” beers while in Las Vegas for a construction expo. He entered the Flamingo Las Vegas Hotel and Casino’s wildlife habitat and took the bird as a prank, thinking it would be humorous. However, the incident caused the flamingo injuries, including missing feathers, broken shafts, and blood loss.

Video evidence presented in court showed Fairbarn handling the flamingo inappropriately. Witnesses testified that Fairbarn, under the influence of alcohol, made poor decisions that led to the incident. The flamingo required medical treatment, including antibiotics and pain medication, to recover.

Fairbarn’s lawyer argued that his client did not intend to harm the bird and that it was a regrettable consequence of his intoxicated state. Despite the defense’s claims, prosecutors maintained that Fairbarn caused the bird physical pain, as evidenced by the feathers found and the bird’s distress during the incident.

The Flamingo Wildlife Habitat confirmed that Peachy has since recovered and is in good health. The incident sparked discussions about animal cruelty in Las Vegas, with animal rights advocates emphasizing the importance of protecting animals from such acts.
