The Norwegian athlete, a two-time Olympic champion, had been sidelined due to surgery earlier this year to address issues with scar tissue around his left Achilles tendon.
During the race, Ingebrigtsen made a stunning comeback in the final stretch, moving from third place to overtake Florian Bremm of Germany and secure victory with a time of 13 minutes and 15:29 seconds. Reflecting on his win, Ingebrigtsen expressed his disbelief at his own success, stating that he only felt confident about winning with 600 meters remaining in the race.
His competitors praised his performance, with Etienne Daguinos hailing Ingebrigtsen as a “legend of our sport.” Bremm acknowledged Ingebrigtsen’s superior speed, admitting that he initially believed he had the race won before Ingebrigtsen surged ahead.
Ingebrigtsen opted not to participate in the 1,500-meter event at the championships, focusing solely on the 5,000 meters. His recent struggles with Achilles issues impacted his performance at the previous world championships in Tokyo. Despite this setback, his victory at the European championships marked his seventh individual gold, solidifying his status as the most successful male athlete in the history of the continental competition.
In a separate event, Amy Hunt of Britain claimed victory in the women’s 100 meters, finishing in 11 seconds to outpace her competitors. Jessica Schilder of the Netherlands secured her third consecutive shot put gold with a throw of 20.73 meters, emphasizing her dominance in the field. Leonardo Fabbri defended his men’s shot put title with an impressive throw of 22.31 meters.
