Kelsey Mitchell was the top scorer with 29 points in a thrilling 101-95 victory for the Indiana Fever against the Toronto Tempo on Tuesday. Caitlin Clark, a standout player, contributed 24 points and seven assists to secure Indiana’s fifth consecutive win. The crowd at Scotiabank Arena showed their support by donning Clark’s jerseys.
Returning to the Tempo’s lineup after a two-month absence due to injury, Brittney Sykes put up 15 points, five assists, and two rebounds. Despite Marina Mabrey’s stellar 22-point performance, Toronto suffered their 11th consecutive loss. Aneesah Morrow, coming off the bench, recorded a remarkable double-double with 14 points and 16 rebounds, setting a new franchise record.
Sykes had been sidelined with a left plantar fascia injury sustained during a game against the Fever on June 16. Toronto experienced a 10-game losing streak in her absence. The Tempo, previously in contention for a playoff spot, now hold the third-worst record in the WNBA, ahead of the Connecticut Sun and Seattle Storm, who are already out of playoff contention.
In terms of takeaways, the Fever, known for their high-scoring prowess averaging 96.2 points per game, showcased their offensive strength by shooting 44% from beyond the arc (11 for 25) and scoring 50 points in the paint. Despite trailing throughout the game and falling behind by as much as 17 points, the Tempo displayed some positive statistics, including 22 second-chance points, a 41-32 rebounding advantage over Indiana, and 38 bench points compared to Indiana’s 20.
The key moment of the game came when Mabrey sank a three-pointer in the closing seconds, closing the gap to four points, but the shot was invalidated by a palming violation called by the referees.
A significant statistic was the Tempo’s struggling offense, converting only 39.1% (34 of 87) of their field-goal attempts, with a 32.4% (12 of 37) success rate from three-point range.
Looking ahead, the Fever will face the Dallas Wings on Thursday, while the Tempo will take on the Washington Mystics on Wednesday.
