A horse named Haaland has made a remarkable comeback to secure a victory on the racing track. The seven-year-old racehorse, originally from New Zealand and trained in Australia, shares its name with the well-known Norwegian striker, Erling Haaland, of Manchester City.
Although Haaland may not match the scoring frequency of the Premier League star, boasting two wins, six seconds, and four third-place finishes in 22 races, the horse achieved a significant milestone by clinching its first win at a metropolitan track in Sandown-Hillside, Victoria, after a prolonged winless streak of 800 days.
Under the guidance of jockey and trainer Lucinda Boyd, Haaland triumphed in a £25,000 handicap race, wearing a distinctive green and white-checkered visor. This victory marked Lucinda Boyd’s 118th win as a rider and her tenth since obtaining a training license.
The emotional victory celebration in the winners’ circle included Lucinda Boyd and her husband Anthony, who jointly manage their Ballarat stable. Lucinda expressed her joy over Haaland’s win, attributing the success to the horse’s fitness and strategic adjustments in equipment and race distance.
However, Lucinda later revealed the true extent of Haaland’s journey to victory, disclosing that the horse had overcome significant health challenges, including atrial fibrillation and a heart attack during recovery. She emphasized the horse’s resilience, describing the win in the metropolitan race as a remarkable achievement considering Haaland’s miraculous recovery.
