The Mirror extends heartfelt gratitude to the 585,038 volunteers who participated in Keep Britain Tidy’s Great British Spring Clean, collecting 451,887 bags of trash to safeguard wildlife, beaches, and green areas from the waste crisis affecting the nation. In addition to the volunteers, nearly 70,000 students engaged in the largest environmental mass action, supported by various notable figures including PM Keir Starmer and Environment Secretary Emma Renyolds.
Among the remarkable volunteers were Girlguiding Kidderminster’s Rainbows, Brownies, and Guides, who collaborated to gather a staggering 7,788 pieces of litter, demonstrating teamwork and community pride. Karen Blanchfield, founder of the Little Litter Warriors project, expressed her pride in the young volunteers’ commitment and enthusiasm.
Various groups such as the Karimia Institute, Fiveways Centre, and Green Academy Trust also participated in litter clean-up initiatives across Nottingham. Individuals like Judi Herman and her dog Biba, known as the Litter Hound, have been actively cleaning their local areas, with some even turning their efforts into entrepreneurial ventures.
One such example is Flora Blathwayt, who transformed her passion for collecting trash into Washed Up Cards, a business creating handmade cards using collected plastic. The initiative aims to spread a message of environmental care and positivity through recycled materials.
