Supermarkets may soon have extended Sunday opening hours following discussions among government officials. Currently, large stores in England are limited to opening for six consecutive hours between 10am and 6pm on Sundays, with closures on Easter Sunday and Christmas Day. However, smaller shops under 280 sq metres are not subject to these restrictions and can operate at any time on Sundays.
Reports from The Grocer suggest that easing Sunday trading regulations has been informally proposed by Treasury sources amid criticism faced by Labour over forthcoming business rates reforms. A recent bill passed by ministers permits the introduction of a higher business rate multiplier for properties with a rental value exceeding £500,000, with the aim of funding reduced rates for smaller enterprises.
Although the possibility of changes to Sunday trading rules remains uncertain, past patterns indicate a divided response from retailers. The Conservative stance has historically favored preserving the uniqueness of Sundays, while Labour’s challenge may stem from union opposition.
The business landscape is further impacted by increased costs, including a rise in National Insurance contributions for employers from 13.8% to 15% and adjustments to the minimum wage rates. Notably, the minimum wage for different age groups has been raised, with implications for businesses like Tesco, Asda, and Sainsbury’s, as highlighted in an open letter to Chancellor Rachel Reeves warning of potential job losses, inflation spikes, and store closures.
The government has defended the tax hikes as necessary to safeguard public services, asserting that the higher minimum wage will particularly benefit younger employees and apprentices.
