Google has issued a crucial alert for MacBook users who utilize the Chrome browser. The tech giant announced that it will discontinue support for Chrome on older versions of Apple’s macOS. While Chrome will still function on MacBooks and iMacs, it will no longer receive updates or security patches, potentially leaving users more susceptible to cyber threats.
The change will impact Macs running macOS 12 (Monterey) or earlier. Users on these platforms will need to upgrade to a newer operating system, like macOS Ventura, to ensure continued browser support. Unfortunately, some older Mac models, such as pre-2018 MacBook Airs and iMacs predating 2017, are incompatible with Ventura, necessitating a new device purchase for some users. The update is set to take effect in July this year.
According to Google, Chrome version 150 is the final release compatible with macOS 12 (Monterey). Subsequently, Chrome version 151, expected to launch on July 28, 2026, will mandate macOS 13 Ventura or later for operation. Users must ensure their devices are on macOS 13 or above to receive future Chrome updates.
While older Chrome versions will work, no further updates will be available for users on macOS 12. Google advises transitioning to a supported macOS version, macOS 13 Ventura or newer, to continue receiving the latest security updates and Chrome features.
