An innovative glass structure has been designed to provide shelter for mountaineers facing high-altitude challenges. This unique camp, created by Italian design firm CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati in partnership with Salone del Mobile.Milano, is set to debut at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan before being transported by air to its final location in the Alps.
The striking bivouac is the result of a meticulous design process that aimed to blend seamlessly with the natural Alpine setting. Utilizing a 3D scan of the local rock formations, the architects sought to create a structure that integrates harmoniously with the environment, in contrast to the more intrusive bivouacs often seen in the region.
Carlo Ratti, co-founder of CRA, emphasized the importance of creating a structure that minimizes its visual impact while maximizing its functionality. The design incorporates features for energy production, storage, and water harvesting through air condensation, showcasing a commitment to sustainability and efficiency.
According to Maria Porro, president of Salone del Mobile.Milano, this project symbolizes a harmonious relationship between architectural research and the natural world. The journey of the glass house from Milan to the Alps embodies the principles of circular and responsible design, reflecting a thoughtful approach to environmental integration.
Drawing inspiration from the renowned Italian architect Gio Ponti, Carlo Ratti highlighted the concept of architecture as a crystal. This vision was translated into the design of the bivouac, utilizing digital fabrication techniques to seamlessly blend the structure with the natural rock formations that define the Alpine landscape.
