The Boyce family cherishes their shared connection with Nestlé, as multiple generations have been employed at the Nestlé Tutbury factory in Derbyshire. This long-standing affiliation with the company holds a special place in their family history, dating back to World War II.
Established in 1901, the Tutbury factory initially focused on producing tinned milk before transitioning to instant coffee manufacturing in 1959. Presently, the factory is a bustling hub, churning out 170,000 jars of Nescafé daily, along with 25 million Nescafé Dolce Gusto pods weekly and a range of Starbucks at Home products.
For siblings Sam, 58, and Karen, 63, who both work at Nestlé, witnessing the factory’s evolution over the years has been rewarding. The company has not only brought stability to their village but also offered ample job opportunities to the local community.
Sam, who started at the factory in 1995, initially packed coffee sachets for Concorde flights. Reflecting on his journey, he appreciates the advancements in automation that have streamlined production processes. Climbing the career ladder, Sam now holds the position of shift manager, relishing the diverse opportunities and perks Nestlé has provided him, including global travel experiences.
Karen, who joined Nestlé in 1998, found a perfect balance between work and family life by working evening shifts while her children were at school. As a technical operator crafting sachets for hotels, she takes pride in her work, especially when enjoying a cup of coffee on vacation.
The family tradition at Nestlé continues with Sam’s son Ryan, 38, who currently serves as a lead operator. Ryan aspires to venture into engineering and is pursuing a NVQ level three in mechanical engineering, supported by Nestlé’s commitment to employee development. Inspired by his father’s dedication to family, Ryan values the work-life balance Nestlé enables, allowing him to actively participate in his children’s milestones.
Beyond its rich UK heritage and familial ties, Nestlé remains a beacon of innovation, leveraging British expertise and technology to produce globally renowned coffee brands.
