Andrea de Adamich, a former Formula 1 driver, has passed away at the age of 84. De Adamich, who competed for McLaren and Ferrari and participated in 34 World Championship Grand Prix events, met an unfortunate end to his F1 career due to a severe 10-car pile-up during the 1973 British Grand Prix at Silverstone, resulting in a broken ankle and other leg injuries.
Following his retirement from racing, De Adamich transitioned into broadcasting, becoming a well-known commentator and TV expert known for his insightful analysis and willingness to engage in on-air debates. From 1978 to 2012, he hosted the TV show Grand Prix on Italia 1.
Born in Trieste, De Adamich began his successful motorsport career by winning the Italian Formula 3 title in 1965 and later achieving victories in the European Touring Car Championship. Throughout his career, he drove for Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, March, Surtees, and Brabham, showcasing his talent in endurance racing as well.
De Adamich’s achievements include wins at prestigious events such as the 200 Miles of Buenos Aires in 1970 and the 1000 KM of Brands Hatch in England in 1971. Despite retiring in 1974, he continued to shine in the racing world, earning a podium finish at all four 1000km races he entered that season.
Apart from his racing accomplishments, De Adamich also made a mark in television, garnering widespread appreciation for his broadcasting work.
