A spill of fire retardant has occurred on the northbound lanes of Route 11 in the vicinity of Jacquet River and Charlo, as confirmed by the provincial government. The government’s Facebook post at around 8 p.m. on Wednesday acknowledged the incident and urged the public to refrain from direct contact with the substance.
Fire retardant, containing ammonium polyphosphate as its primary component, is utilized to impede the progression of fires and is also utilized as a fertilizer. The province attributed the spill to a contractor operating on behalf of the Department of Natural Resources.
The spill has resulted in a noticeable “brightly-colored solution” on the roadway, prompting authorities to advise drivers to exercise caution. Assessment is underway to determine the potential effects on individuals and the surrounding environment.
