European leaders gathered in Kyiv to celebrate Ukraine’s Independence Day amidst Russia’s ongoing invasion of the country. UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham, along with several other European leaders and dignitaries, including European Council President Antonio Costa, participated in the event. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha emphasized the significance of independence, stating that Ukraine has fiercely defended it throughout history.
Burnham co-chaired a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing, a group supporting Ukraine against Russia, with France and Germany leaders expected to participate online. Burnham highlighted the importance of supporting Ukraine by advocating for enhanced sanctions on Russia and pushing for a ceasefire.
The visiting leaders pledged additional military and financial assistance to Ukraine. Burnham announced the UK government’s approval for defense company MBDA to share classified information related to British components used in the SCALP missile, facilitating plans for local production in Ukraine with French collaboration.
President Zelenskyy stressed the necessity of foreign assistance in the face of the Russian aggression. The Kremlin reacted negatively to Britain’s involvement in supporting Ukraine, accusing the UK of exacerbating the conflict. Russia and Ukraine continue to engage in long-range strikes to weaken each other economically and militarily.
In a tragic development, three teenagers were killed in southern Russia during the conflict, underscoring the toll on civilians. The ongoing war has seen continuous aerial attacks, resulting in civilian casualties and infrastructural damage. Both countries are locked in a cycle of escalating violence, with no apparent progress in peace efforts led by the US.
