Balsam fir trees in New Brunswick are displaying signs of distress, turning red and dying due to the severe drought experienced last summer. Concerns are rising about the future of these iconic trees in the region. Forestry expert Prof. Anthony Taylor from the University of New Brunswick has been closely monitoring the situation, noting the detrimental effects on the evergreen trees, popularly used as Christmas trees.
Taylor, who has been studying climate change impacts on New Brunswick’s forests, observed a similar pattern of balsam fir die-offs following previous hot and dry summers in 1986 and 2018. He explained that the warm and dry conditions of the drought hinder the trees’ growth process, leading to their inability to photosynthesize and produce essential energy stores for survival.
The shallow root system of balsam firs exacerbates their struggle during dry periods as they find it challenging to access sufficient water. Peter McKeil, a woodlot owner, has witnessed significant damage to his trees, with the lower branches turning red and new red spots emerging regularly, indicating an ongoing die-off. Despite salvaging some trees for lumber, McKeil is adapting his harvesting practices to maximize the remaining fir trees’ value before further losses occur.
McKeil expressed concerns about the future of balsam firs in southern New Brunswick, attributing their decline to the worsening effects of climate change. He emphasized the need for urgent climate action to prevent further deterioration of the species. Taylor reiterated the urgency of addressing climate change, highlighting the visible impact on the iconic balsam fir trees as a warning sign requiring immediate attention from society to reduce fossil fuel consumption and forest exploitation.
