Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has urged Prime Minister Mark Carney to display more determination in the ongoing trade discussions with the United States. Poilievre, along with Canada-U.S. relations critic Shuvaloy Majumdar, expressed concerns in a letter to Carney, highlighting instances where Ottawa has acquiesced to various demands from the U.S., such as scrapping the digital service tax and removing counter-tariffs.
The duo pointed out concessions made, including involving the United States in sharing revenue from the Gordie Howe International Bridge. They disputed Carney’s stance that no deal is preferable to a bad deal, citing job losses in Canadian manufacturing hubs reliant on cross-border supply chains.
Poilievre accused Carney of continually yielding ground to American demands without reciprocal benefits, emphasizing escalating tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, and lumber. He advocated for a favorable agreement that encompasses zero tariffs on softwood lumber, the elimination of sectoral tariffs on steel and aluminum, a tariff-free auto pact, and exemptions from Buy America regulations on infrastructure projects.
With impending U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods, both countries are intensifying trade negotiations. The Conservatives reiterated the need to fortify Canada’s bargaining position by establishing a strategic reserve of critical minerals, contingent on reciprocal market access agreements.
While Canada and Mexico sought a long-term extension of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), the U.S. opted for rolling annual reviews. The U.S. has raised concerns about Canada’s supply management system protecting its dairy industry, prompting calls from Dairy Farmers of Canada not to concede in trade talks.
In response to industry insights, Canada is reportedly considering concessions, like ending bans on American alcohol sales, to secure tariff relief. The negotiations also involve discussions on lifting retaliatory tariffs on U.S. autos and potential adjustments in the dairy sector. In return, Canada aims for the removal of new tariffs and relief from sectoral tariffs, alongside a commitment to resume CUSMA talks in the upcoming months.
