Two toddlers aged one and two tragically drowned in a First Nation community located in the Island Lake region of eastern Manitoba, as confirmed by the RCMP. The incident was reported to police when the children were brought to the nursing station at Garden Hill Anisininew Nation just before 2 p.m. on Wednesday, according to a statement released by the RCMP on Thursday.
Initial reports revealed that the toddlers were discovered in the lake by a family member and were swiftly transported to the nursing station by safety officers from the First Nation. Despite efforts to save them, the boys, aged one and two, were declared deceased at the nursing station.
Authorities indicated that the toddlers likely wandered away from their residence and ended up in the nearby lake, ruling out any suspicion of foul play in the incident. Island Lake RCMP Sgt. Chris Hipolito expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss, emphasizing the profound impact on the families and the entire community.
The Garden Hill Anisininew Nation is situated approximately 475 kilometers northeast of Winnipeg.
